Nihilist Penguins

Contemporary Painting in Galvani Galerie Nürnberg about a depressed penguin

What happens when a penguin sets off on its own and goes to the mountains?

Werner Herzog Nihilist Penguin Art Show
Werner Herzog Nihilist Penguin - Artistic inquiry into the Anthropocene and planetary disorientation.

In 2019, I saw Werner Herzog's film Encounters at the End of the World. Since then, I have been thinking about the question over and over again in a series of paintings:
What if a penguin sets off on its own and set off for the mountains.

Planetary Intimacies research on melting ice and digital infrastructure.Nihilist Penguin exhibition with Planetary Intimacies Paintings
Nihilist Penguin by Werner Herzog as a symbol of existential disorientation in the Anthropocene – Part of the Planetary Intimacies research series.
Exhibition View | Galvani Gallery Nuremberg 2023
Artistic study of the nihilist penguin death march – Exploring the intersection of climate nihilism and digital data streams in contemporary installation art.
Herzog searches for "ecstatic truth": a deeper, poetic reality that facts alone cannot reach. My glacial work with Planetary Intimacies scans, maps, and examines ice to do, in a way, the same. Yet the more data I collect, the more I feel like that penguin.
